Very often, two characters (usually, but not necessarily, an NPC versus a PC) will struggle against each other in some way. For example, a tug-of-war would be a Str vs. Str contest. To resolve a conflict like this, both contestants need to roll their appropriate stats. In the example of a Str vs. Str, both roll 1d100 and add their Str score. The NPC rolls a 57 and the PC gets 34. The NPC’s Str is 45 (so his total is 57+45 = 102), and the PC has 60 Str (so his total is 34+60 = 94), so the NPC rolled higher. The NPC wins the contest, dragging the PC through the mud.
